In 1932, the Studebaker company lost money, in fact, $46 million, on the sales of the 1932 model. The eight-cylinder cars were the models that lost the most volume of sales. For the 1933 year, the company dropped the Dictator line of cars. In 1934, Studebaker brought back the Dictator model, but this time, it came back as a 6-cylinder model. For the 1934 year, Studebaker boldly redesigned all body lines of every model with a streamlined body. The Dictators featured power boosted brakes.
Also new that year, were many interior changes. A new instrument panel now features a new design with spaces for a clock and radio. The visors were now adjustable. The steering wheel was finished to match interior trim. New was a front vent window and the rear side windows swung open to the outside. Hand grips appeared as well as ash trays, hidden rear curtains, larger cowl ventilators, and a new ventilation system.
This 1934 Studebaker Deluxe Dictator Six is a rare piece of history. It was just pulled out of storage and retains all its originality. The car has had only three owners since it was purchased new in 1934. The miles are 65,000 original miles.  Everything on this car is original except for the tires.
The exterior is the original Blue Bruce paint, and the fenders are black. The body is very solid and straight and has no rust issues. Because the paint is 89 years old, it does show patina from its age, however, this is a survivor car and not many of those remain today, if any at all. The chrome looks good for its age. All glass is original and shows its age. Wheels are the original Budd steel spoke wheels.
The interior is the tan original fabric. It has held up very well for its age. Impressive is how good the condition of the dash is. There is a NOS headliner that will come with the sale of this car. The rear window has a hidden curtain that was standard for that year. The handle that is on the back of the front seat still looks relatively new. The rear door panels have a convenient pocket for storing items. The steering wheel is in great shape and so is the woodgrain trim around the windows. Floor shifter knob is also in good condition.
The engine is the original 6-cylinder L-head, 205.3 cubic inches. The original transmission is the Helical 3-speed manual. Carburetor is a single draft Stromberg. Ignition system is distributor and coil.
This car started up with ease, no 2nd try was necessary. It has the Startix automatic engine starting mechanism. It automatically starts the engine even if it is cold or stalled. The car runs like a champ!
It really is a shame to restore this car, although I would think that most buyers would want to. This antique Studebaker is a time warp and a distinctive piece of American Automotive History. A museum would be its perfect new home. But no matter what the cars future is, it is a great automobile!
This 1934 Studebaker Deluxe Dictator Six was purchased new in Maine at the Pierce Arrow & Studebaker Dealership. The car is now with the new owner in Kentucky. Serious buyers may only view the car by appointment.
